Gods became personified because human imagination needed to give them a form to recognize them. None of the Gods ever existed. And at the same time all Gods are existing as formless principles running this reality.

Shiva, guru of the yogis, is nothing else than pure, omnipresent consciousness. Or called by Kashmiri tantrics as Paramashiva (great Shiva) – non-dual totality.

Why than Abhinavagubta, one of the greatest tantric masters, was worshipping Shiva, knowing that Shiva needs no worshipping or doesn’t care about it at all?

Because worshipping is not what Gods wants, but something that humans needs to do. To connect and unite with these formless principles. To recognize that principle in themself.
